It wasn't working well at all. The blood of sheep could not take away sin. That's why the high priests had to offer an atonement year after year. By subjecting an innocent man to death and hell, it was the latter that broke the law and could now be judged and condemned. A sheep can't do that, only a sinless man.
The old system was only a shadow of what was to come in the spirituality of mankind. It would point the way to a higher reality.

the system WASNT working "well enough" before!
one of the very first things that GOD told man kind after the fall (in the book of Genesis) was that one day He would send someone to remove the stain of sin from the world. in the mean time they would have to use the blood of animals to cover the sin.
notice i said the blood of animals "COVERS" the sin. it does not remove it. the Blood of Christ, being pure and holy, actually removed the stain of sin. and now, as Christ has come and died for us, we cannot use the old way to deal with our sin. it is no longer acceptable.

The "system" wasn't working well. Sin had separated us from God, who is holy. Jesus was God's plan to bring mankind back into right relationship with him. Without Jesus, we are separated from God forever.

You are satisfied with God dwelling in a temple and with us making animal sacrifices to atone for sins? And that was only a foreshadowing of what was to come. Animal sacrifice was never in itself enough. No, it wasn't enough. God was waiting for the right time in history to enact the most key part of his plan, Jesus' atonement for all our sins. After that, we no longer have to sacrifice and God doesn't live in a temple, he lives in our hearts.

It wasn't working well. The world missed the point in His teaching. Salvation is not about obeying rules and laws.
