Was the bomb needed to end the war? Probably not, but what it did was save so many lives on both sides. The American troops were going to be sliced up and British and American sailors would be killed from so many kamikaze items against them (Boats,Subs, Planes) Japanese solders and civilians would have to be killed as well. Mothers were going to throw their babies under are tanks with TNT in their bundles. The bombs showed the Japanese that we can also be able to kill a large amount of people, but we can do it with little effort. The fear of more bombs made the Japanese surrender

The projections for losses in American lives incurred in an invasion of Japan topped 2 million. The first wave of invasion troops was expected to be totally wiped out...100% casualties. That doesn't even begin to consider the carnage that would have been inflicted on Japan or the casualties inflicted on the US Navy by Kamikaze attacks. The Japanese islands would have been virtually depopulated because of the fanatical resistance of the Japanese people. The atomic bombs saved lives on both sides of the fight. Obviously, it saved many, many more American lives, but it brought the war to an end. If they had not dropped the bombs, the war would have gone on for at least another year. The invasion of Japan would not have been a rapid thing.

No, the bomb wasn't required to end the war, but it accelerated the end (and that saved lives). Japan refused to surrender, preferring to die in defense of the emperor instead. The bombs showed the Japanese high command (and the emperor) that further resistance was useless and would only cause untold suffering amongst the civilian population. Even after the bombings, there were elements within the Japanese military who still wanted to resist. Fortunately, the emperor did the right thing by ending the war.
