Just curious, where does the "duck sauce" you put on egg rolls get its name from seeing as how there is no duck in it?

The duck sauce I'm familiar with is kind of sweet, slightly sour that chinese restaurants use when they serve Peking duck.

The sauce is a multi-tasker meaning it's used in a variety of dishes and since it's sort of sweet and sour some chinese restaurants use it as a condiment for eggrolls or fried won tons.

Definition: Duck sauce is another name for Plum Sauce. The name "duck sauce" comes from the fact that Western Chinese restaurants began serving it with the pancakes that go with Peking Duck, under the mistaken impression that this was an authentic practice. (In China, Peking Duck is traditionally served with hoisin sauce). But whatever name it goes by, plum sauce makes an excellent dipping sauce for appetizers, such as Egg Rolls and Spring Rolls.

this mite not be exactly true. but what i think, is that the chinks capture ducks and squeeze the crap outta them until a liquidy orange substance squirts out their nostrils. thus producing what we in America call "duck sauce"

It's because it's nasty stuff and when someone tries it...they throw it. Then, someone else yells "DUCK!!! sauce"
