After people have been been missing for a period of time (not sure if it varies from state to state) the families are contacted for their dental records which are put into the system along with the other descriptions of the missing person. Other times, local authorities know who is missing (you see coverage on the news all the time), if they find someone matching the description, they will just ask the family for the dental records.

The police don't do it as they do not have the skills or training.. A forensic odontologist does the work. It is also not done via Fax. The odontologist has to have the actual teeth to be compared with the dental records.

If they have an idea of who the person might be, they check against the records of that person.
There is no national database of dental records.

Well the cops do have a list of people that have gone missing around the area. Regardless, it's not an easy process

Dental reocrds are used to CONFIRM idenity. Say someone is in a fire and is burned down to bone, if they think they know who it is, they can contact their dentist to compare the xrays.
