There is actually a lot on the Internet about this subject if you look. Search on "egg drop toothpicks"

The link below supports my initial thought that you want to build something that gets progressively larger, where the outside will break - hopefully protecting the egg in the process. My other suggestion is that a triangle is the strongest geometric shape. Use triangles in your design as much as possible.
