Electronic devices us a variety of light producing technologies, Your standard overhead light uses a hot filament. The main difference is heat. The tungsten flilmant in standard light bulb produces enough heat to gradually vaporize the filament, eventually causing it to become thin enough to break.
Older electronic equipment, would use small very low wattage light bulbs, that produced much less heat and last much longer. Modern electronics use either Light emitting diodes, which convert 99 percent of the power to light, and very little to heat, or flourescent lighting, which uses and ionized gas as the conductor, and is immune from the evaporation effect.

Because they are engineered for lifespan vs light output since you can't easily change the bulbs inside a HIFI or VCR. You can get ceiling lights that don't burn out as often but you won't get as much light output.
This link talks about light bulbs and longer life!

They are probably under-run (working at lower than design voltage) to lengthen life. Otherwise long life fluorescent/cold cathode tubes/LED displays or whatever?!!
