Has anyone had a visa from the chinese embassy in EDINBURGH (only) can you go and wait for it ,or do you have to do it by post ? what are there opening hours ?

There are only 2 ways to obtain a chinese visa, either through a travel ageny has part of a visit to china or in person through one of the embassies.
The embassies for visa processing are only open in the morning, and you come with your forms and simply hand them in, you then have to wait for 3 threes and then come back in the morning again. However if you apply for the same day you have to be there before a set time.

Congratulations, I hope you will both be very happy! Also, move to Shanghai - I believe it is very modern there and far less rigid than other areas of China under government control.

Yes you can go and wait for it, but I'm not sure whether you can do it by mail.
