The answer is in how much you can afford.

If you are trying to do something you can't afford, then it is too much.

Keep within your means.

If you can afford it, then price it and buy what you believe is advisable and affordable.

I agree, it depends where in the city you are having the wedding, what time of year, day, how many people and how formal you want it to be. I am having a little over 250 guests in my Manhattan wedding (although I have heard Long Island is a bit cheaper) and my budget is at 80k without the honeymoon. We are also getting help from the parents (on top of the 80k) mind you, this is for a Black-Tie evening event in a 4-star hotel and a seated meal.

If it helps though, I had a friend throw a very casual type wedding for 300 guests that cost (without honeymoon) 60k. But she had her reception outside of Manhattan and did more of a cocktail with heavy hors d'ourves type event.

It depends on what type of "extras" you want, ie photographer, video, DJ, etc, and how nice the venue is. I was looking at having my wedding in NYC, and I think it would be around $50K for 250 people, assuming you keep everything very moderate, or look outside of the city (ie Beckwith Point in new rochelle). Just be really careful about hidden costs. One friend spend $8/pp to put covers on the chairs ( had to pay for cover, bow, and labor to tie te bow).

Too much is any price you have to go into debt for, or put a burden on those paying for the wedding.

Depending on what you want; A full blown, sit-down catered reception, band, decorated church wedding, I'd say that it'd be upwards of $40,000.
The last I heard, it was running about $125 per person for a dinner.

It totally depends on how much you can afford. For some people 3 million is reasonable...for others, 5-thousand. If you can afford it and want that kind of wedding then it isn't too much

I think any wedding regardless of the location or guest should be kept to less than $10,000 and if you're looking to spend more that that you need to get your priorities straightened out or else you will have a marriage full of debt.
