This is the greatest city on the planet., and we don't take kindly to rat jokes.

Skip Little Italy, go to Manducatis in Queens for Italian.
Grimaldi's under the Brooklyn Bridge has the best pizza.
Sripraphai is the best Thai, and it's in Queens
Pastis is great for French 9 9th Ave
Lucky Strike is also good for French
Cowgirl Hall of Fame is a really quirky western-southern place
Joe's Shanghai is great Chinese in Chinatown

Definitely eat in Little Italy..Mulberry Street is lined with authentic Italian restaurants with Italian workers and cooks. It is not expensive..or where I ate it wasn't, we went to Puglia. If you are going to eat at Chinatown make sure you eat at the most crowded place. The empty ones are that way for a reason and may have questionable meat products i.e. cats. Cross over the Brooklyn Bridge and get some pizza, fold it in half and fit in with the locals.

Mama Leone's was the hot spot for italian, but I understand they are no longer around. I hear a place called Carmine's is the closest thing to Mama's. Pretty much, most of the suggestions are going to be italian.

there are great restaurants everywhere in NYC; many of the places mentioned are in manhattan, and most of them will have great (rat free, lol) food. If you wanted to stay in queens (and potentially save a few dollars?) there are great irish pub/restaurants in sunnyside, good indian restaurants in jackson heights, and eclectic mediterranean restaurants in astoria. tell us more about exactly what your interested in, and we'll make more specific recommendations. :)
