Just for discussion's sake, imagine the Airforce declaring war on the Navy and the F-15 meets the F-14, one-on-one with the best pilots of each services manning them. Who might do the victory roll? (Continue imagining that the F-14 is still in service!)

A little more details.
1) The Phoenix has drawn blood in combat and there are claims that a single AIM-54 had taken out multiple targets.
2) The Shah chose the F-14 after a competition with the F-15.
3) The F-14 can fire the Slammer.

F-15. The Phoenix was never proven in battle. The F-15 is a air superiority fighter that has never lost a fight. The F-14 would have to remain a long way away where as it was said before it's old weapons could not get through the F-15 counter measures.. Up close, the F-14 would not stand a chance.
I believe the Navy trains it's pilots to much of the same standards as the Air Force. Having a Ph.d does not make you a smarter pilot. Some of the greatest pilots alive today never finished High School.

F-14 would be a winner, BVR and WVR, while phoenix missile could handle everything in bvr, dogfighting capability of F-14 cannot be dismissed against an F-15, F-15 tend to loose energy faster in slower speeds than the F-14, and since close in dogfight is done in a much slower speed, F-14 have an edge, a true Air Force F-15 pilot should agree that they are inferior compared to their Navy counterparts, any F-15 pilot who would like to disagree with this, im asking them to land their Eagle in a carrier and try to take off from it, one thing which shows the Navy pilots are way ahead from Air Force pilots.

If you fight your battle with stand-off weapons, then it's more a matter of luck and electronic technology than it is the planes. If you take it into a straight duel with guns, I think the 15 would come out on top. It's my opinion the 15 is a little better weapons platform. By the way, I enjoy making fun of the squids and jarheads as much as any Air Force pilot, but on the serious side if there is a difference in their combat capabilities, I'd hate to have to live on that difference. Those guys are good.

Late note for phnx: You don't accept email, so I have to use this forum. You say the fighters in Red Flag have trouble bringing down the Hercs. I would be interested in knowing why. Admittedly it has been quite a few years, but have our skills degraded that much? The 130 is a great plane, but against a fast mover? I have a problem understanding that.

The F-14. The Phoenix missile can shoot down enemy aircraft over 60 miles away, and has hit drones under optimum conditions over 200 miles away. The airforce AMRAAM (Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air missile) has a range of about 30 miles under excellent conditions. In a Dogfight, the Eagle would win. The eagle was developed as a dogfighter, whereas the Tomcat was primarily designed to deliver a nuclear payload, then that was canceled, and the airframe was built around the Phoenix. If the Airforce specializes in flying, why does the Navy have 5 times the aircraft? Tell me the Airforce has better pilots, on a dark and rainy night, with aircraft landing aboard an Aircraft Carrier that's pitching 30+ feet in the vertical?! In my Military experience, it has always been Airforce pilots that "stick out their chests", acting very cocky. The truth of the matter is that Navy pilots will always see more real combat, due to the Airforce's needs' to secure a runway in a foreign country they can launch their aircraft from. Most countries don't get involved. The Navy brings the runway with them!

Eagle. Higher specific excess energy, lower wing loading.

The Phoenix was impressive but it has old electronics that couldn't burn through the F-15 countermeasures, it's also not a very manoeuverable missile, the range might seem impressive at 100+ miles, but it's not very much further than an AMRAAM launched off a fast moving F-15 and the AMRAAM would have a much better chance against the F-14.

The F-15 can also do a better job of denying the F-14 a good ranging solution, both with its ECM fit and manoeuverability.

When it comes to close range the F-14 is in a world of hurt, the F-15 would be on his tail in no time and it's "goodnight Vienna".

As a past developer of weapon technology I find people's belief in the marketing of missiles highly amusing. Believe what you like, even an AMRAAM doesn't have a particularly high kill rate at decent ranges and I'm not at liberty to discuss why. Others who know these systems won't be keen to point out why long range shots don't work out how you might hope. :D

Id have to give the edge to the F-14 for a couple of reasons:

1. the potential for a long distance unobserved or undetected kill with the phoenix missile long range camera system. no radar emissions to give it away.

2. Two heads are better than one. F-15s only have certain aircraft with a guy in back to carry some of the offensive weapon load: this is standard with the F-14.

3. Both have similar performance packages, with the exception of the variable wing configuration. Dogfighting with a F-14 can be a very un-nerving experience with something that can vary its flight characteristics (IE fast to slow and very very agile in its turns.)

4. In a knife fight, the electronics don't mean nothing. they supplement, but don't guarantee the outcome of anything.

5. i will say this: an F-15 does have the upper hand when it comes out to accelerating and getting the heck out of danger.

just an opinion

5.

In a hypothetical battle it would still be a tough outcome. Although the 15 in general has the advantage with better technology. In a dogfight though the 15 still has the technological edge but it more down to who is the crazier pilot. Normally the winner is going to be who put themselves in more advantageous position first. But just keep in mind that fighters still have problems taking down C-130s in a realistic combat situation. Just goes to show that all that technology can just lead to excess weight.

well the f-14 tomcat and the f-15 eagle out of those i would chose the f-15 because it is a more updated version.

the pilot of the F-14 would shoot his phoenix(s) and be at the bar having a beer before the F-15 (or 6 of them) splashed down.

That's easy: The F-15 pilot. Doesn't have as much to do with the craft as it does with the training. The Navy loves to shove their chests out and say their pilots are so much better than Air Force pilots, but the truth of the matter is the Air Force pilots are far superior to those in the Navy and the Marines because the Air Force specializes in one thing -- FLYING. Imagine the Navy's Top Gun as someone holding a bachelors' degree and the Air Force's top pilot holding a Ph.D. Not hard to figure out who wins THAT match-up...
