How do I know what format for a dvd I need if I am buying from the UK?

I want to buy a dvd I can only find in the UK but there are certain formats that you have to have to work on a USA dvd player. Anyone know what it is ????

Two things come to mind. Make sure the DVD is NTSC and is made for Region 1.
