Wow, the folks answering this questions are irritating! This is not about digestion, but the fact that it should not take a 6 year old an hour to eat. Geez!
If your son is the a rare one who sits for an hour straight, focused on his food, doesn't fool around, chews very slowly to enjoy his food, then fine. But my guess is that you are constantly telling him to eat and keep him on task. Your son is probably at the age that he can tell time, so let him know what time you will be taking the food away. Give him 30 minutes and remove his plate.

I have the same problem and have recently started timing him. It seems to be working so far. Other than that I have to sit with him to keep him focused. Please keep in mind that he needs a minimum of 30 minutes to finish a decent 6 yr old sized portion...so an hour is not horrible.
And to others answering this question...its not necessarily a matter of digestion. Yes, it does depend on the amount of food the child has. However, some children actually do take too long to eat for several reasons. My son can eat a bowl of mac n cheese in about 15-20 minutes. So anything else the same size I would expect to take around 20-30 minutes. But if it is anything else besides mac n cheese, he says he doesn't like it, and will take well over 2 hours for him to finish the same amount of food (if I let him take his time).
Some children do get distracted or will delay eating on purpose. Don't attack the parents just because they have an honest question.
Good luck!

since I am assuming you have a normal healthy 6 year old, like myself, I would say he probably talks alot, plays with his food, does alot of fidgeting. 30 mins at the table with everyone and he might eat half his food. ten mins after everyone gets up, he finishes the rest. Normal portion for his size and age, 30 mins is about right. The ding bats saying let him take an hour to eat have no life!

There is no sure way to do that, and I don't think you should rush him. It is healthier to eat slower because your body will feel full when it is full instead of after getting over full. I know it is frustrating but would you rather be bored by waiting or take a page out of your sons book and eat slower and enjoy a meal together. Please don't think I am trying to sound condescending I just know that one of my brothers eats really fast and is over weight and the other eats really slow and is skinny, they have both been that way for as long as they could eat by themselves.

He shouldn't eat fast, this can cause obesity later on, plus stomach and digestion problems. Take away distractions, such as TV, games, toys, things like that, just where it leaves him at the table with his food. He will probably tire of sitting there just staring at his food and eating and will more than likely finish his food a little faster to go play.

My daughter is three and takes a long time to eat because she fools around at the table. I use the kitchen timer (around 1/2 hour) and after the timer goes off I throw her food out or put it away. I had to throw a little bit of food out once but since then when I tell her I'll turn the timer on she stops fooling around and eats her food. Best of luck.

Well actually...you should ask him to teach YOU how to eat...
Humans aren't supposed to stand at a trough and scarf up food.
It should take you about an hour to get through a meal.
He's doing it right...take a lesson from your son.
Not only is it healthier...but you also get to slow down and enjoy the good company.
Relax, Chew your food...take your time.
Life Work Laundry and everything else...will still be there when you're done.

Don't rush him to eat, give him the time to eat at his own pace...by the time he is 12 he will eat everything in the house in under a second.
