Ok, I am 19 so I don't know much of anything about this but a few weeks ago I found out I had a 3 year old kid. I need a paternity test done, but I don't know what I'm supposed to do, just that if it's done through the courts, it's much cheaper.

Is there a way to keep it just between me and her though? Is that even advisable? Any info at all would be helpful, I have no clue what I'm doing so far...

Also, if anyone happens to know how long it usually takes to have that dna test done, that would also be appreciated. Thanks!

You can buy a home paternity test kit over the internet for about a $100. I guess the advantage is that you would know for sure that you're the dad. However, it probably wouldn't be admissable in a court proceeding because of the chain of custody wouldn't be established--basically stated you could lie and switch the test results. For that type of DNA test you go to a neutral third party to have the test done, then results are mailed to you, the mom, and the court. That type of test is used to establish paternity legally, at which point things like custody and child support can be settled legally.

So if you want to know just for your own personal edification, go with the private test. But, if you ever want visitation or custody of the child (and at this point you may not know what you'll want down the road) then it will be best to get it legally established and get your name on the birth certificate as the father.

DNA tests are done fairly quickly these days, so while the results wouldn't be back the same day they'd be back in just a week or two.

look in your local yellow pages under dna testing or paternety testing or call 18004336848 genetica labs and they can give you a consult. where i live you can have a lab person come to your home or the lawers office and do the test on you and the child and it is very private. You don't have to have any one involved but if she is after you for childsuport then it is best to have a lawyer to keep every one honest. in my area the test run about 400 dollars and they will hold up in court if needed.

You can go to the doc anytime and request a test. Only dad, mom, and the doc will only know.
