Yes, there would be chaos and a breakdown of civil organization. And isn't that exactly what is going on while our troops remain there? So why should our people stay around to get caught in the crossfire? What debt do we owe to the Iraqis?
There's no evidence that any significant number of Iraqis want US troops to remain in their country. Why, then, should the US expend lives and wealth in the effort to force Iraq to become what it has never been, a "democracy" fitting the US definition of what it should be?
After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the British tried to build a state called "Iraq" on the lines of a pattern chosen by them. They used British military power to prop up their chosen puppet leader in Baghdad. Who authorized the US to inherit the colonialist policy of the British?

The Americans, the Europeans, and even the Israelis really don't know what it is all about, do they? During the last generationת hundreds of thousands of children have been taught all over the Muslim world in madrass schools to become martyrs for Allah in order to kill the infidels.
These youngsters not only are ready to do it, but are actually in the process of doing it. Bombs are going off all over the world killing and maiming thousands of people, not only on 9/11 in the US, in London, Madrid and Bali, but in Africa, India, Bangladesh, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and many other places. The first signs of the Islamic tsunami are already here, but the West doesn't understand, or doesn't want to understand what is coming.
The Americans, instead of realizing that this is as bad as World War Two, or even worse, are going to pull out of Iraq, handing it over to Iran on a silver platter. Next may come the Saudis and the rest of the Gulf states.
When dirty bombs go off all over Western towns, who is going to stop the Iranians?

Everything would be happiness, unicorns and rainbows, and many people in this nation will quit worrying about the deaths of Iraqi civilians because they only use them as a weapon against our president.
They will quit screaming 200,000 Iraqi deaths, or whatever, and start yelling about something else their non fictional news corps ran by rich white guys lacking to donate to their hopes for a better welfare system and insured abortions.

You're right. Chaos no matter when we leave. I don't see how Iraq will "stand up". That's like a parent waiting for their kid to "take responsibility" while the kid gets free rent and his laundry done. Although, the American people like the appearance of honor-Nixon said "Peace with Honor" regarding Vietnam-and we all know better.
And, yes, the US is very much like the old British Empire. That empire is no more and the US is on a dangerous path.

I think given the fact we basically destroyed their country we do owe the Iraqis something. What that is I don't know. Their government doesn't function like ours so there's no simple solution. Personally I feel badly for them. They've lost alot of innocent people there, have had their infrastructure virtually completely destroyed because we "liberated" them. I think all they want from us at this point is for us to leave because we've done them enough damage trying to "fix" their country...
