As a hairstylist, I first evaluate the hair condition. If it's not hair loss due to breakage from damage, I ask the following:
Are you wearing your hair in a pony tail more than you used to?
Are you wearing your hair curly more often?
Are you shampooing less frequently?
If you answer yes to any of these questions, then it might just be that you only see your hair shed when you shampoo it. If hair is straight & you have your hands in it a lot, you won't notice when you drop hair.
Have you had a change in stress levels?
Stress can cause hair loss. The only solution in this case is to lower your stress levels.
Have you just had a baby/pregnancy?
Has there been a change in your birth control meds?
Hormonal changes can cause temporary hair loss. Your body will correct itself in time.
Do you have an eating disorder? If you're not getting the proper nutrition, your body will not waste resources on producing hair (even if you take vitamins).
If this doesn't apply to you, I suggest you do some blood work. Hypo-thyroidism can cause hair loss. Doctors argue about what's considered a normal level of TSH. Ask for a copy of your bloodwork to be mailed to you. It might be that what one Dr considers normal, another won't. You can read more by following the link below. Lots of people have a thyroid condition that goes untreated due to this.

Misty R gave a great answer. One more cause could be genetic female hair loss. After you've ruled out all other possible causes and also had your thyroid and hormonal levels checked, this could be what's going on. When women experience this, it is usually thinning on the top of the head, the back is usually unaffected. Rogaine is the only thing proven to stop or slow down hair loss, but you have to commit to using it for the rest of your life. Nioxin products are great for thinning hair, you can get them in a salon. Taking a good vitamin never hurts, as well as some Biotin ( vit. B), but unless you are severely deficient in anything, poor nutrition is rarely to blame for hair loss.

Probably hormonal I went thru a phase with that issue but now it seems better. Could be thyroid related too. Eat more protein. Take good multivitamins like Nature Made. Hair also cycles between growth/shedding phases. If it gets really bad, then consult your doc for blood tests, advice.

Many times the cause of hair loss for any sex is because of stress. Go see a doctor or counselor to see if this is what the problem is, and they can give you medication for it. <3

There are several medical conditions that causes hair thinning/loss including thyroid disease. I would get a thorough exam to rule out something medical and go from there.

One home made alleviation that works for me is to therapeutic massage your scalp together with your fingernails daily. Probably excellent to so whilst having a shower. Feels well too... I do recognise a normal alleviation that works. It is the one product with FDA permitted constituents out in the marketplace for re-developing thinning hair for each guys and girl. You can investigate it out in case you like....well good fortune!
