i have a big problem. my Standard Poodle is a hellion. i cannot walk him because he pulls so hard he's caused strains in both of my shoulders. He needs to be walked though, because he is just steadily getting worse. How do i tame him so that i can walk him?

Other problems with him include his fetish for chasing cats. If he could get ahold of one, i'm sure they would end up hurt, as when he gets on in his sight, he doesn't stop for anything, just keeps chasing till he can't get at them because they're up a tree or on a rooftop or some other height he can't reach. He won't even listen to me when he's got a cat in his sight. It's like he has tunnel vision and all senses are in tune to the cat and the cat alone.

Thank you in advance for any answers and advice.

Consider purchasing a type of leash called a "Gentle Leader".

At first glance, the gentle leader may look like a muzzle... but it is not. When fitted properly, the dog is free to open his mouth to eat, drink, pant, fetch, bark and even bite - except when you close his mouth by pulling on the leash. This device allows the trainer to show the dog who's the boss. It stops your dog from pulling you when you take her for a walk. It can even be very useful when training the sitting command.

The ability to close your dog's mouth with the pull of the lead allows you to stop her from biting, barking, jumping, and running forward.... which is perfect for your situation.

It's actually more humane than a normal leash because it doesn't pull on your dog throat.

Get a choke chain collar and a sturdy leather leash. When you walk him put the collar on him. When he starts to pull give him a hard yank and tell him no in a firm voice. If he sees a cat and tries to go chase it be more aggressive with the jerk and more forceful with the no. You need to let him know that you are not going to put up with his behavior. If he continues to try to pull, just hold on and let him choke a little bit. He will slack back when he realizes you are in control.

something that helped with my bulldog when I walked him, when he would start pulling I would pull back a little bit the leash. I would pull a little harder until I finally got his attention. Now he enjoys walking a lot better and he don't pull me down the road either, you best bet though would be to take him to dog training classes, but a lot of them like for him to be able to walk on a leash.

you need to go to dog training classes they will give you lots of advice,in the mean time buy a halti it goes around the nose and neck it cost about £8 from pets at home,he wont like wearing it at first and will try to get it off see if you can get his attention by giving him treats until he gets used to it, if he pulls pull him back and tell him close,i wouldn't let him off the lead until he was trained to come back when he is called.
