George's Story:
http://www.nwc.navy.mil/museum/VJDaySailor/

"In 1994 the photographs were submitted to a nationally recognized photo analysis expert, Richard Benson, a professor of photographic studies and currently the Dean of the School of Arts at Yale University. Professor Benson’s report reviews the ample evidence from the photo and concludes, “It is therefore my opinion, based on a reasonable degree of certainty, George Mendonsa is the sailor in Mr. Eisenstadt’s famous photograph.”"

"George was invited to the Life building in New York and was asked by the staff of Life Magazine who he believed to be the nurse from among the women who had come forward. George indicated that Greta Freeman was the only possible choice based on her height. The other women were all too short in comparison to George’s height to be the nurse in the photo. "

this is what happened...
they starting kissing like you have already said, then when the kiss is over the mans wife turns up and slaps the lady and kicks her husband in balls and drags him back home to give him a another slap and a right telling off....
then next day he sets sail to fight for his country and never looks at another woman as he lives in fear he wife might be watching....

and the lesson we learn here is always kiss other women miles away from were your wife might see...

The woman actually lives in Palm Springs, CA. I can't think of her name off the top of my head right now. She is in her 80's. She just made headlines a couple of weeks ago when she delivered the eulogy (sp?) at someone's funeral... someone important, I forget who they were though at the moment.

The sailor has remained nameless.

They were both alive in 2005. I remember the city of NY (where the shot was taken), or something, made a life size statue of the famous kissing couple as a symbol of the time and what it meant to the nation. The links below take you to a few stories of the two who aren't married or anything like that. It was a fleeting moment that happened on a whim. It was caught on film by a photographer taking pics of reactions to the announcement of the end of the war.

A big double bed in a hotel room. What you think? We're celebrating together.

They got married in California, had three kids, divorced ten years later and the sailor got everything that fell off the truck as she drove away (California law)!

Apparently that was a posed photograph, so presumably they got paid or thanked or both and went their separate ways.
