Usually when a person is that guarded they it is usually due to they may have been abused as children or had one or several bad relationships and/ or they are painfully shy, and they feel its better to be alone than to be with someone than to experience that kind of pain again, the best thing that you can do is be a friend and encourage them as much as you can to socialize, and become part of the world again, just be a friend and tell them that you are nearby, if they need a hand or want to get away for a day
