Upon our return we are going to have a big reception. I want to send out save the date cards for the reception, but I'm not sure about the wording since it's not really saving the date for a wedding. Any suggestions?

The wedding and the reception are happening within a matter of weeks of each other, so we can't really say, "so and so were married" for the save the date because there is not enough time to make plans at that point.

I think sending a save the date is a nice gesture to let your guests know in advance about your plans. Also be sure to send them a formal invitation 4-6 weeks prior to your reception. Here is a couple of suggestions for a post wedding reception save the date and invitation. Hopefully this will give you some ideas.

We got married on the Island of St. Thomas
My invite was the actual wedding -
My parents announcing the marriage of me
TO my husband
his parents names
Where we married (black beards castle on the island of St. Thomas (the time/date) and inside the invite was a formal invite to the reception (two weeks later).
I knew 100 people were not showing up at our wedding but would be at our reception.

You may not be able to do this alone. I think you may need a Preacher and Two Witnesses.
I would just make some cool looking cards on my computer.
Front may say; "Upon our return...."
Then inside give a date and what happening.

Please come and Celebrate the Marriage of Susie and Bill...we're doing something very similar, except we're having our family at the wedding on St Thomas.
