I think that your question would have a lot more relevance if you were to ask "How many different types of trees are there on (a particular continent or in a particular country)..." We'd also be able to narrow down the list for you instead of the vaguest of ballpark figures for the whole world!!! I doubt that anyone would know anyway!

I come from Australia. We have something in the order of thirty or forty different genuses of trees, one of which is the Eucalypt. In this genus alone there are something like 750 distinctly different species and that number is growing every year because the Eucalypt is still evolving - cross breeding is producing new species with a distinct set of characteristics.

The person who said that most hardwoods are deciduous is, in a word, wrong. As well, some Eucalypts (such as the Peppermint association) have VERY narrow leaves. Conifers do not have leaves as such. The genus Eucalypt is defined as a hardwood and they are NOT deciduous. How about putting your "Americocentrism" (a belief that all things are based on, or found in, America alone) aside and realise that there are another 165 countries that exist!

What are the two major types of trees?

There are hardwoods and conifers. Hardwoods grow broad leaves while conifers have narrower needles instead. Also, most hardwoods are deciduous which means they lose all of their leaves in the autumn and must grow back a whole new set in the spring. Most conifers are evergreen, meaning that as their needles die, new ones take their places right away. Because of that, even during the winter they are green.
