I have an akita and they are great guard dogs. You have to get them from a reputable breeder though. They are very protective of family, but be careful with them around strangers. They are very playful and fluffy, but they shed they're whole coat twice a year, so you have to do some derious grooming. But they are big dogs, so be prepared for the little puppy to grow to be at least 90 pounds for a female. As long as they are raised with children they're perfectly fine around them. They become very attacted to their family and you'll have a great companion for years to come! They don't need to omuch excercise but they love to play. I hope I've helped you and I'm sorry to hear about your dog. Good luck!

German Shepherds are the best guard dogs. They are easily trainable, a good family pet ( they will protect children like their own), and have a good sixth sense when it comes to judging strangers. Start with a pup of about 8 weeks old. Get the puppy into training classes at this young age. Shepherds are from the working group and always have the instinct to protect but they are the most playful dogs also. I have a 5 year old GSD that came to me a year ago as a rescue. She had been abused and was very fearful and aggressive towards people within 3 months I had her do a 180 degree change. She is great with children, she guards my house, and loves to go to the park to play. As long as you show a firm hand and do not abuse this breed they will be loyal to you until the day they die.

My personal favorite is a good working line German Shepherd. However, if you want something fluffy, you could get a Giant Schnauzer (from working lines), or a Bouvier (also from working lines). Make sure that you really are looking for a guard dog, and not just a watch dog before you start training. These dogs would make wonderful pets as well, and look intimidating. If you do decide to train as a guard dog, then look for a training club in your area for help. Don't try to go it alone.

I don't really know which breed is the best for guarding but would assume it would be one bred for it. GSDs, dobermans, presas, etc.
The reason I am answering this question is because there have been people saying pit bull types make good guard dogs. They do not.
American Pit Bull Terriers are the only bred to have been specifically bred to NOT be people aggressive. While they will protect you and your family (as most dogs of any breed will) if they feel you are in danger they are no good as guard dogs. With my 30 years of experience (15 breeding) with specifically the APBT I have learned that they will allow someone to break into your home and steal everything from your possessions to the dog itself, but they will protect you if you are home and they feel you are in danger.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Any dog that alerts you to strangers is a good dog, even my little 6 pound darling Chihuahua. Go pick out a wonderful new friend soon.

The truth often hurts, so as not to deliberately offend you, your dog might be alive today had it not been running loose in the street? Just a friendly point to ponder, thus I suggest a mixed breed such as a Lab/German Sheppard of which are excellent guard dogs...

I have american pitbull and that I think is good watch dog because just to look at her make some people afraid although she is really friendly. There are different breeds os bulldogs so you have to be carefule because rednosed pitbull are more aggressive than an american pitbull or an english so most people are afraid of them with out them being mean and mine are so friendly all they want to do is lick and you and play.

Lhasa Apso's & Poodles are good guard dogs, while still being cuddly. They become territorial about their home, cars, people, etc.
Also, unless overly socialized as puppies, they tend to be wary of strangers until you've accepted them into the house.
