I'm not sure what you consider a fortune, but one thing to keep in mind, if you're feeding a good quality food, the benefits are many - you'll save money on vet bills down the road due to their glowing health!

You can choose any of the foods in this link. Some may be pricier than others but I don't think any are outrageous - if they are pricy, it says that in the list (such as for Archetype).

Or you can go the homemade route - grind your own meat or buy it online and add supplements.

The second link has a recipe for grinding your own food.

An inexpensive but not comprehensive alternative:

1 cup cooked rice, drained
1 cup cooked carrots, drained
1/3 cup cooked spinach, drained
1 can oil packed tuna with oil added to mix

Mash together or better yet, run through a food processor without salt or pepper until blended to a lumpy consistency. Serve as a small part of their daily food intake along with dry food. Refrigerate leftovers for up to 3 days.

How much food he/she eats? We give our cat 1 can per day, half in the mornings half around 6pm, when he gets hungry there is always dry food for him, but i bet there is a recipe you can find.
