You may have a point since half the immigrants have already disappeared into our black (no pun intended) society. It would at least save some money. Regrettably, there are some immigrants who are trying to enter Britain whose purpose is less then acceptable to us. As for the abolition of slavery, this applies to the western world perhaps, but slavery still continues in the African continent and nobody seems to care a jot. Double standards as ever.

Anyone who is a legal immigrant or who has legal permission to work or study in a country should be allowed to. It is the illegal immigrants who cause a problem. The US has a similar problem and the consensus is that an amnesty would reward illegal behavior. A proper guest worker program would solve the problem for those who only come to work and then go home.

A solution would be to have everyone in the country register as guest workers by a set date. Anyone there illegally after that date would be deported. Sorry to burst your bubble, but no nation can allow unlimited illegal immigration. Also are you British or Italian by citizenship and loyalty? You cannot be both. The hypenated people are neither one, they do not accept the country they live in. I am not English-American just because my ancestors came from Romsey, I am just American. My wife is not Lebanese-American because her father was born there, she is just American.

The situation has nothing to do with slavery or its abolition, which should be celebrated. They were brought legally until it became illegal and then they had to come in as regular immigrants, legally.

The " commemoration " of the end of slavery
has absolutely nothing to do with immigration.

nor has it ,any relation to the ability,
to obtain jobs in a foreign country !

When slavery was rife , it took brave men,
to condemn the injustice, of the concept ,

as they had to persuade ,the men who made money
out of this terrible trade ; To turn to other ways of getting rich.

Eventually Slavery was almost universally abolished

Some Islamic countries, to this day, stubbornly, continue on with this terrible trade in human beings , .

So we* commemorate*, the Official Abolition of Slavery .
We do NOT celebrate Slavery at all

Surely you are not in Wormwood scrubs .? i do not agree with an amnesty for illegals . there are too many to consider it justifiable . Just because they have managed to avoid detection for years has no bearing . If they had paid their tax's and national Insurance contributions during their stay there might be a slight chance of having their case considered.

Perhaps it would have been a bigger accomplishment if they hadn't enslaved the Irish through economic and political actions. I guess they stopped because it didn't make sense to import slaves when they had a whole island full of them right next door.

It was the British treatment of the Irish that finally pursuaded Ben Franklin that the colonies needed independence.

An Excellant point. Have you considered writting to the "Powers that Be " and asking them ? It may be just what the Doctor ordered. Good Luck !!
