I feel like I am in a severe period of depression in my life. This I accept and understand, however we have a problem in this world because all of a sudden we are all feeling depressed and just turning to medication to correct it. We have a disconnect. If all of a sudden there is a surge in depression and anxiety in the country, maybe there is something wrong with the way were living and not all of a sudden how we are chemically imbalanced. I dont believe it. There is no way that all of a sudden human beings are incapable of handling lifes difficulties. Life has been difficult forever and now that there is medication which "cures" depression everyone needs it. Again,
I am going through a severe depression right now and I say this coming from the perspective of someone who thinks this world needs to change and not the chemical imbalances in our head. ANYONE AGREE???

The world isn't going to change...but your perspective of it can change.

Pharmacutical companies want you to believe that you need a pill for everything...just eat better and ignore them...better diets take away the effects of anxiety that seem to bog people down in the first place...

Been down that road...now I am not depressed since I changed my eating habits...

Unfortunatly the insurance companies can be partially to blame for this quick fix as most do not cover talk theropy or hands on care.Doctors have no choice but to reach for a quick fix.Medications do work for the most part, for some people it can take years before they find the correct one. Also the meds themselves take up to 1 mounth to take full affect.
If you are wondering why so many people are on antidepre-sents I think 9/11 and this war we are in.These are extremely stressful times, and chemical imbalances hasn't a thing to do with that.Yes this world definatly needs to change.

I grant you that medication is prescribed too often for depression and such. It's an easy "fix", rather than taking the time and effort to eat well and go to therapy and deal with life. However, there are people who do need the medication. I know I am not a functional member of society without any medication; I'm a miserable, impulsive recluse with a death wish. I eat well. I exercise.

We are a society that is pressured to work in ways that regular humans beings are not supposed to. There are so many expectations and rules and if you do not follow them you are considred to have something "wrong" with you. The pressure of trying to maintain your own personal happiness in our society is tought. We are a people in denial. Some things just are the way they are, yet we still tell ourselves otherwise. All these contradictions are tough on our psyches, and that's why so many resort to drugs to make life easier.
