If it definitely does not smell bad (or a little off) and if it is still pink in the middle it may be safe. BUT if in doubt, throw it out, because saving a few dollars is not worth getting food poisoning!

Ground beef goes bad very quickly in the fridge. I won't leave it in there more than two days anymore (after losing several pounds over the years). If it doesn't smell bad and you want to try to cook it, put it in the frying pan. If it smells off at all, you need to pitch it. I would guess it's probably bad. It really depends on how consistently cold your fridge has been. Did you open it a lot? etc.... If your fridge is near freezing and you haven't been in it much at all, it might still be o.k.
Short answer, if it were me, I'd pitch it.

As long as it doesn't smell bad and it isn't hairy, I think it is safe to use. If it needs a shave before cooking, then throw it away. You always go by the smell. If it smells alright then cook it today. You can definitely tell when any meat has gone bad by the odor.
So what are we having for dinner tonight and what time should we be there?

Smell it, if it has a strong odor it's bad. Just going gray does not mean anything. Usually you have 5-7 days past extperation to eat the meat unless ti was frozen. Then you have about 5-7 days after thawing out assuming you froze it before the experation.

cook it or throw it away
depends on your food budget
fresh is always best, buy for one or two days in the future
if you do intend to eat it, almost burn it in a wok and add TONS of spices
