They are really neither on social issues. They tend to be fiscally conservative, but there are many individual differences on social issues. A libertarian could be either socially liberal or socially conservative. As a group, they are able to put their personal feelings regarding social issues aside. They may be personally opposed to a specific social agenda, but they believe even more strongly that lifestyle should not be legislated. They are for small government and greater personal liberties and choice. For example- they believe that I have the right to make choices, good or bad, without government interference, and that I alone bear the consequences or the benefits of those choices.

Way more conservative economically than the current govt. Republicans raised discretionary spending by 40% the last 12 years and Democrats are up to the same thing. Libertarians believe in reducing the size of govt, which is the exact opposite of what everyone wants in America. Most people want Socialism ASAP and the poor will suffer most of all because jobs will be hard to find. Socialism has created much higher unemployment in France and higher suicide rate. This is what America desperately wants but not the Libertarians.

Economically/legislatively conservative, socially liberal capitalists. As an example: We're against Universal Medicine and Pro-Choice on Abortion (we may not agree with abortion, but we agree the government shouldn't make the choice for us).
The basis is a literal interpretation of the Constitution and an understanding of the Founding Fathers' intent through the Federalist Papers, among other sources.

Half and half. On individual liberty they are liberal. They support individual rights. Neocons claim to support individual rights, but that support tends to end with the 2nd amendment. Neocons do not support reproductive autonomy, but they do support morality legislation.
Libertarians tend to be legislatively conservative--the fewer laws, the better.
