The truth is that Johnson toyed with the much smaller Burns taunting him along the way. He probably could have stopped Burns from the 6th round on. The Australian police stopped the fight with Burns taking a terriffic beating at the hands of Johnson. The filming was also stopped at the end of the fight.

Smitty ~

Brents quick with the keypad today, he beat me to this one. Tommy Burns was pretty muched forced into fighting Johnson because Johnson followed Burns all over the world to each and every one of his fights and taunted him. Finally burns caved in under the pressure of the public and agreed to fight Johnson.

Jack Johnson was the first African American to fight for the Heavyweight Championship of the World considered professional sports most valued title. In front of a crowd of 20,000 at Ruschcutters Bay, Sydney Australia Jack Johnson beat the bajeebies out of Burns dropping him in the very first round with a short crisp right hand. This set the pattern for the rest of the fight. The fight was so lopsided that Johnson intentionally let Burns hit him.

It has been said that every sportswriter covering the fight didn't have Burns winning one singal round. Even the local papers didn't give Burns one round. In the 14th round Johnson was tired a fooling around and proceeded to beat burns literally from ring post to ring post catching him with every single shot he threw.

The crowd grew restless and screamed to "Stop the fight" but referee Hugh Mc Intosh "The only white man Johnson trusted to ref the fight" had no part of it. Finally the police stormed the ring and put a hault tto the extremely over matched Burns.

This is all fact and not my opinion.

Thanks for the question Brother.

Conventional wisdom was Johnson was totally dominating Burns, and from the tapes I watched I concur. Who knows why they stopped the film when they did, history has given us the tape we have, and several reasonbly reliable literary accounts of the event to formulate opinion from.
