40 of the 43 studies conducted on this have demonstrated that atheists do, on average, have significantly higher IQs and education levels.
Though I'm sure that undereducated places like the bible belt and deep south do skew this a lot. There's more likely to be more dumb people within 78% of the population than within the 10-14% who are atheists.
Though this reasoning only sidesteps the issue that, in fact, atheists are smarter (per capita) than believers...

Well, if atheists are so smart, then why do (most) of them on Y!A keep asking such stupid questions about God and religion?
Occasionally I meet an atheist who has a serious philosophical objection to some major religion, but most of the atheists on here just cut & past some sophomoric argument from a webpage that can and has been rebutted hundreds, if not thousands, of years ago and can be easily found in a few seconds with Goggle. Like they expect religious people to abandon their faith because an atheist can state the obvious (like the genealogy of Jesus is different in Matthew than in Luke -- hello! we can read too, and we saw that already since it is on the front page of the NT), or an atheist thinks that he can look smart by playing games with semantics by toying with the wording of a poor translation (Hello! The Bible wasn't written in English, silly).
You can't prove that you are smart by acting stupid. A wise person should have figured that out by now.
===edit===
It is true that many Christians might be poorly educated, but that is simply because the Church is supposed to accept all people, irregardless if they are smart, stupid, rich, poor, black or white. We are not supposed to be elitest snobs.

Atheists aren't smarter, it's just that Christians are more gullible

If you are a atheist, you would not even believe in God. So by making that statement, you proved God makes atheists dumber than Christians.

i dont think he did...and if he did, God probably wanted people to see that you don't have to be the smartest person to be a christian. you can come as you are and be who you are and not someone who fears the possibility of not being good enough for God. Jesus hung out with all of the people who were "messed up" in his life. thats what were supposed to do as people. love all and treat each other equally.

When people believe in God they have an inclination to keep their faith stable. They don't need to criticize or to think of a a lot of things because it's dangerous for their inner faith. They live for the life after death - to live now is not their goal. They don't need results, they don't need to act - just to prepare theirself for the so called future. Atheists are not the same.

Who said they were smarter? is that from Human Thinking?
Col 2:8 Don't let anyone lead you astray with empty philosophy and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the evil powers of this world,* and not from Christ.

Does a belief in one religion as opposed to another make you smarter. I don't think so.However, accepting people for who they are and what they believe in makes you intelligent.
