OK, this is a loaded question. A lot of different dogs are good with kids. You should ask what kind of dog is good for such and such lifestyle. Are you active, a jogger or are you at work a lot . Is anyone home all day or part of the day. You need to know how much time the adults of the house have, because it's not up to the kids to take care of the dog. Have you ever had a dog yourself? My favorite dogs are boxers and pit bulls. Some people would run screaming from both of those breeds, but I've always had good success at training them and having them around children. You will get a good family dog if you make it a good family dog. The most popular are labs, golden retrievers, and and mix breed from the shelter. I suggest going to your local shelter and see what kind of personality and size dog would fit your lifestyle. DO NOT go to a pet store for a dog no matter what. That's another story and another long rant.

I have three dogs all raised around children. All are child friendly but the one that seems to love children the most is the Cairn Terrier. She adores kids and does not mind being picked up, held like a baby or any other kind of doggie affection that small children dish out. She gets excited when she sees a stroller because she knows there must be a baby in there. She even goes up to doll strollers looking for the baby. Look the breed up, they are fantastic family dogs and small enough but sturdy.

Everyone is probably going to say their breed is best with kids. Any dog could be good with kids if raised with them and taught proper manners right from the start. You also have to teach your children how to behave around dogs, if you have younger children like I do you have to teach them to be gentle and not leave them alone with the pup/dog for even a second because you just never know when your child will run up to your pup and pull a ear or tail or scare the pup resulting in a bite. When i leave the room i either take the pups with me or they go in their crate. I have a boston terrier who is GREAT with my children, very hyper ( I call my living room the Boston 500) , a total escape artist (waits till we leave the house and when we get home he is out of his crate??? don't know how we have to video tape the bugger :) ), can't keep him confined to one room with a baby gate because he could jump that like it wasn't there, he is a great dog, learns really really quickly. I also have a 3 month old American Bulldog who is also great with my kids and is getting bigger by the second. totally helps with tiring out the Boston Terrier, real loveable dog. Try looking up a dog breed selector on the internet this may help you find a dog that suits your lifestyle and help you find what you are looking for. Once you find the breed you want please research the breed before making your final decision, This is what i did for each of the dogs i added to my family. Researched them on the web and asked breeders about the breed. Good LUCK!
Here are some of the ones I used when I was looking for a pup.

Most breeds, if raised with children, will be fine. The most important thing when picking a dog is to make sure it fits your lifestyle. How much attention can you give a dog? How much time can you spend walking your dog every day? How much time will the dog spend alone? These are all more important questions to ask about different breeds. The only advice I would give about specific breeds is to stay away from the really little toy breeds, especially if you have really young or rambunctious children.

Visit your local animal shelter. We have a puppy (she'll be a year next month) from the humane society who is absoutely AMAZING! Her mother was a springer spaniel collie mix and her dad was a "one minute-one night stand kinda man." She has traits of not only the springer and collie, but she's got dane characteristics, and the disposition of a lab.
Why pay tons of money for a designer dog when you can rescue one? There are so many amazing dogs out there for adoption and any dog can truly be a good dog as long as you put time and energy in loving them.

A boxer. I grew up with them my whole life. They rarely bark and have such a great disposition. They are so laid back. I have come to learn boston terriers are very affectionate, but little dogs are skitish around children. And beleive it or not I was bit by a black lab so you never know. Common sense is just not leaving them alone. The child can pull the ears or tail and enrage any dog or any animal.

St. Bernards,
Beagles,
Collies,
Generally any kind of Hound,
and normally any kind of dog can be "good for kids", it's all on how you allow the children to interact with the dog and how you discipline the dog around the children.

I beleive one of the best possble kinds of dogs for children are labs. I have one that is wonderful! It also deppends on the child you are thinking about getting this dog for. Chiwawas are great dogs for kids who can give them lots of attention and are careful not to step on the dog, also a kid that has alot of energy also beagles) for more quiet kids who aren't rambuncious i suggest labs and huskies.

Most people probably won't agree with me on this but I am a lover of pit bulls. In my opinion they are the most loving, caring and loyal dogs you could own!! They only get a bad rep because of bad owners!! If you treat them with respect and love they will give it in return times 10! I have 2 kids one 5 and one 3, they get along great with my dogs! My female protects them like they are hers.. she has to sleep with them, and if I won't let her, the first place she goes in the morning is into their rooms to make sure they are ok!
