A friend of mine recently went through chemotherapy, and is now in hospice care. He has drawers full of brand-new prescription pain medications that his doctor told him to no longer take. I hate to see these go to waste, and don't want them getting into the wrong hands, nor do I want to throw them away/flush them for fear they could leach into water supplies or worse. Help!?

Ask his hospice nurse, as they usually take back the medicine that isn't used.

Or call your local health department. There are many recycling agencies that will re-use the medicine for people who can't afford to buy it.

Thanks for being so thoughtful and not just throwing them away! You'll help some needy person out there!

Only the person for which the prescription was made can take the pills. No one will accept donations of drugs for fear of tampering and other issues. What I have done in the past is just taken it to the drug store and they will dispose of them properly. If there is alot of drugs don't flush them, some drugs can stay in the water supply.

well the only thing that will happen if you take them back to the pharmacy any pharmacy is they will dispose of them . never use again .
i suggest you put the non pain killers in the garbage not down the toilet just in the regular garbage .
the pain killers keep them leave the label on them one day you or someone you know may need that exact med dose all exact same and you can save money by giving it to them free.
other then that you can only put all of them in the garbage.
or take them to a pharmacy where they will put them in the garbage

Legally, all you can do is flush them and throw away the bottles. I used to work in a drug rehab and that is the protocol.
