I'm using a new Intel iMac, with Mac OS X 10.4.9 (It had 10.4.8 when I got it). Ever since I got the machine, the Software Update application will not function. When I click on the option, an icon for a generic application appears in the dock for a few seconds then goes away. It's my school's computer, so I do not have access to the OS X install disk. Does anyone know what happened to my Software Update, or how I can fix it?

And don't tell me that they've disabled it on purpose, because it's worked fine on every other computer I've used from this school before. It's a technical problem, that's all.

Please do not lecture me. We are expected to update our software when it becomes available. As for the idea that the system is "broken"...How do I fix it??

Sounds like a problem for your school's technical support people. If they aren't updating it then if something happens, like it gets a virus(not likely) its their fault. Remind them of that if they are being lazy.

They might have deleted it or the system is just broken somehow.

You shouldn't mess sround on a school computer software update anyway...
