The demons asked to go into the pigs and be given a chance. Jesus could have put them in the pit at that very moment and the demons knew it. Have you ever thought that the pigs have a chance at heaven but the demons don't? Remember Jesus Christ is God and He knew the hereafter.

The pigs was used as a offering to a god named Baal. Which means He was both casting out demons and showing that He's stronger than any human-made god.
PS: For people that is wondering where does it said it in the Bible: it doesn't directly, you will have to do research.

Why do we sacrifice innocent pigs for football games? Perhaps Jesus was making a point that human life is more important than animal.

Just a thought....
Jesus and the people he preached to were Jews. They didn't eat pork. On farms, pigs don't serve any purpose other than food. So why were there pigs around?
Wouldn't Jews be using sheep or goats?
Could this be a mis-translation?

For everyone saying that pigs are just for food because the Bible says so, are idiots. Every single living thing matters, this biblical statement just shows that religious people really don't care about life at all. They just care about themselves and what they have to eat and how they are getting to heaven(paradise). So they do what some silly book tells them, because they have faith that all their wrong doings will still lead them to the promise land.

Think "context"! Who was that passage written for? Jews!, swine were considered unclean-where else would be better for an unclean spirit?
I assure you that if Jesus had been talking to atheist-it would have been different.
