All right now, what I would like to know is this. Why is it that almost every Christian I've met feels the need to be obscenely ignorant to other possibilities,do they not realize that their faith is just another one of these possibilities??I can understand that religions require a blind faith, however, does that also mean that they should ignore reason??or is it just another case of 'Ignorance is Bliss'??Do they not realize how, sorry to say it,stupid and childish it makes them seem???Should they not have an open mind when it comes to anything to do with life and existence??

Now I know many of you are about to blastme for whatever but at least TRY to be objective about something like this question,I ask it earnestly and you're sitting there probably thinking I'm just another athiest, well I am not I have my own views and beliefs, but am also willing to learn about other religions and try to keep an open mind to everything and anything.I KNOW NOBODY HAS ALL THE ANSWERS ESPECIALLY NOT SOME OUTDATED BOOK THAT MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE BEEN A FABRICATION OF MAN TO BEGIN WITH. Christian's feel because the bible exists, it must be true??? WTF, Is it not possible that it could have been some fictional tale that got turned into a religious thing over the massive passage of time, look at Star Trek for example, PEOPLE LIVE THAT SH!T, even tho it's fake they still do it, and who knows maybe 500 years from now it will be accepted as actual facts, I don't know nor do you, but at least I am looking at every angle.

Don't throw all Christians in the same pot. Also, there are fake Christians and true Christians. Some who think for themselves, ask questions, reason things out, try to find answers to their questions, are open to be challenged... and maybe even have to admit that they don't know the answer.

Those who have "blind faith" are, in my opinion, either too lazy to think, or are being scared by their leaders not to think for themselves; because their leaders don't like to be questioned and don't want to lose control over their "sheep".... and the money they bring into their coffers.

Much of religion is just "scare-tactics" by some power-hungry individuals instead of true faith.

Keep asking honest questions and I'll try to answer them on this site. You are in my contacts box, so, I'll know when you ask questions.

You say you have your own views and beliefs, yet you want to know about other religions. You also say Christians should be open mind when it comes to anything to do with life and existence, and I suppose you are open mind, then. At the same time, you dont want any evidence written in books, that could be made by men's illusion. Do you know what is tough here? Answer your question...

Well, I cant speak for a Christian, because I am not the stereotype of Christians you directed your question, but once you say you want to know about religion, I would recommend you search for Spiritism.

I think that Christians or non-Christians, atheists or theists, they are all trying to make their point clear. It is human nature to struggle to sound wise, smart and logical. Nobody wants to be dumb, right? If I believe in God (just an example), I dont want to look like a fool for believing in Him, so I'll try the hard I can to prove His existence, or at least to sound the more reasonable as possible. The same happens to atheists. They will try the hard they can to prove there is no God, so that they are not considered dumb. This is all religion and no-religion is all about.

The best thing is not to get yourself overwhelmed with other people's point of view. Respect and accept differences. Accept even those Christians that come desperately to you offering Salvation... Think about that, in their minds, they are offering the best thing they have, although it might not be your opinion about it. Just accept it!! Respect is really tough, but if everybody tries to be respectfull, things would be much easier.

Peace!

Your question was, "Why is it that almost every Christian I've met feels the need to be obscenely ignorant to other possibilities...."?

Okay, we don't know the Christians you've met, so we can only speculate as to why that might be. Perhaps the ones you met are not very bright. Perhaps they are, by and large, more prone to superstition, or perhaps they feel that if they open up to the possibility that their faith is wrong that they are somehow committing a sin or not being good Christians. It may be that their "faith" requires them to believe without hesitation.

I think a lot of people in general have a hard time with objective thought or with speculation when it comes to religion. They want or need to believe that they have the right answers -- because if they don't, then their foundations may be shaken and they will not know what to believe or why.

If you take away a simple idea like: "it's true because it's in the Bible" then you have a much more complex process of arriving at "the truth." People have believe systems, and they justify those belief systems by telling themselves that whatever they believe is right is clearly set forth in the Bible, and whatever they believe is wrong is clearly prohibited. They gloss over the details because the details will only open up the possibility that they are wrong. And for some people the consequences of being wrong in this context, they believe, means their immortal soul.

Your question shows your own ignorance. Christianity doesn't require blind faith. It requires a real revelation of God in a personal way. Most Christians I know are very well educated. Christianity and science are not contradictory systems of belief. That is, true science. We do look at the other possibilities, and we find them lacking. I think Christians are more open minded than those who refuse to even examine the possibility that God has the answers.

I do not know many ignorant Christians. Everyone I know is out there studying the different schools of thought in an effort to not be ignorant of what ideas are out there. It is the only mature and responsible way to go about life. Ignorance is never an excuse, it needs to be overcome.

Here's a review of the book I'm currenty reading, "Religious Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know and Doesn't". This book is a good read, explaining how Americans, who claim to be the most religious country in the world (by polls at least) are also illiterate when it comes to their own religion (mainly Christianity), and most have no clue when it comes to any other religion. I have to say, I don't think its a case of ignoring reason, however, blind faith would sum up most Americans. It's sad to think that most Americans are illiterate when it comes to all religions, since it's taking such a huge toll on our sons and daughters right now.
I am proud to call myself a Christian. Although I grew up in church, I have taken the time as an adult to examine my beliefs. I have learned about church history, read the Bible, used different interpretations to form my own opinion about what the scriptures say about how my life should be lived and how I should treat others. Don't judge all Christians by the way the fundies act. My faith is not blind, does not ignore reason, does not depend on ignorance, is not stupid or childish. I have examined other religions and belief systems and did not find in them what I was seeking.

I'm glad you said "almost every Christian..."
I'm a reasonable, college educated, thinking human being. I understand that the bible was written by men. I know that the early church left out a lot of the ancient texts...the "Apocryphal" books. Most people I've come in contact with, in the fifty years of life I've been blessed with, have no idea that these books exist. Still, there's enough information in the bible we have to see our need for salvation, to see our need to have the commandments of God to govern our actions, and to know what we have to do to get to heaven.
Some people don't want to know or feel that there's no need to know anything else but what the bible teaches.

I have wondered much the same thing and agree with most of what you are saying. Christians for the most part don't seem to want to listen to anything other people say that is not about their way of thinking and are quick to dismiss something without giving it serious thought.
There are those that do take into consideration and apply logic to all things, but the majority are mostly ignorant to everything they deem "satanic" in my opinion, so far as judging everyone else by going to hell because of their sin.
If people really want to learn from experience and gain a better understanding of Human nature so that there could one day be a chance for peace, then they should start by looking at their own lives and the impact some of their words have had on others before preaching something from a book which could have been the most popular science fiction book 2,000 years ago.

To date, there are over 26,000 archeological finds and facts that confirm biblical accuracy. Now I realize there are probably a lot that contridict it as well. But it's not "blind faith" as you so delicately put it. There are those who simply believe it by faith, not even knowing about the facts that back it up, however there is a great deal of sources out there that confirm it.
Believe it or not, some of this ignorance falls right back on yourself. There are Christians who believe in evolution and others that believe in creationalism. There are those who believe the universe is 6 billion years old and others who believe it's 6 thousand years old. There are even *gasp* Christian DEMOCRATS!
You categorize Christians as being close minded to other possibilities, but are not Islamics or Buddists the same? Maybe you should do some research before you rant.

No disrespect, but if you have your own views and beliefs...are they solid? If they are, why do you care what Christians believe? I honestly don't understand. I don't have a blind faith. I KNOW in whom I believe and the reasons I believe. I know I've found the truth, so I don't need to know the doctrines of other beliefs. You may call that being close minded, but I don't believe I need to search further. Do you understand that? I'm being sincere, not sarcastic. So if you have your own beliefs, I assume they're not all that solid, or you wouldn't still be searching. Does that make sense to you? <><

That is just your opinion about the beliefs of Christians.
Being Christian does not make me obscenely ignorant to other possibilities. I simply do not accept your possibilities as truth. You cannot accept another persons being in disagreement with you so your going to throw judgment and insults because it threatens you or you are insecure. I honestly don't know why, but it comes across as your being threatened or insecure.
