I was browsing at shafts for my new cue and i noticed shafts differ in color. For example the meucci black dot shaft has a brownish color, but other standard shafts are more pale or white looking. why is this?

Meucci and other laminated shafts are often made from inferior wood, and this can affect the color, as can the glue used to laminate the layers.

The greatest contributing factor to the whiteness of maple is the drying process used. Kilns that use higher temperatures and dry the wood faster tend to cause "staining". Vacuum kilns result in a much whiter product, as do dehumidifier kilns.

Whiter maple is not necessarrily better, but it is currently what most cuemakers look for. Tight, straight grain is much more important than whiteness. Laminated shafts on the other hand are a completely different thing all together.

Two factors determine the color of the shaft. Woor type and finish. Darker colored shafts are made from harder woods and will have less virbation. The lighter colored shafts are soft woods and tend to vibrate, which may have some effect on how well you hit the ball.

By finish, I mean the varnish or laquer coating. They come in different shades, but will have little impart on how the cue performs overall. Some just look nicer than others. Cheers!

Different shafts are made of different woods. Or the shaft could be stained or laquered. Or the shaft could be made of different matierial. Like graphite for example.
