Remember, dogs and cat food came around no more than 20 years ago. Before everybody fed their pets with regular home cooked food. and dogs lived long and healthy life. Now marketing and sales people, along with veterinarians say that human food is prohibited. Guess, why? because it's cheaper and more nutritious, and then nobody will buy the pet food. It's all about money!
Regular people food are fine for dogs if it's balanced. I raised 3 dogs and 10 puppies on strictly human food + dog vitamins. All of them lived long, healthy and happy life.
the basics of their meals: boiled chicken or beef with rice, oats, barley or any other type of grain and a bit of broth. Make it like thick soup. a bit of salt, but no other spices, no fried food. My dogs eat certain type of veggies and fruits (tomatoes, cucumbers, apples, bananas). make it a separate meal. if they like cheese. give them a little bit as a snack before the bed time or in between meals. don't add it to the meat, it will cause indigestion. You can add some vitamins to main meal. and remember, no sugar, candies, cookies (will cause running eyes) and diabetes. And don't overfeed your pets!

No, people food is not bad for dogs. the problem is that what people feed them is the wrong choice. Usually people feeding their dogs 'people food' are allowing the dog to clean their plates for them meaning that the dog gets scraps, leftover fat, leftover gravy and other things that don't get finished or were rejected by the eater. If you were to give this same diet to a person, it would also not be healthy.
A dog is a carnivore (yes, it is!) and as such it needs a lot of good quality protein, not scraps or fat. You can research and cook your dog's dinner using your own 'people food' or you can research and feed your dog 'raw' food. Either way, you're ensuring the quality of the ingredients you're feeding because it's stuff you'd be eating yourself. For more info on raw feeding, go here www.rawfed.com

Some people food is definitely bad for dogs, like chocolate. I'm sure other people out there have an extensive list of "no no's".
You can however make food for your dog. For some free recipes, try http://www.bestdogtraining.net
Email them and send you a list at no charge.

I am not a veterinarian, but I have grown up with dogs all my life. I know for a fact that if dogs eat human food it is not bad for them. I think it depends on what you give them. Stick with fully cooked meats, or hotdogs. Their bodies can become over weight just like ours, so stay away from fats, this could lead to heart problems. Good Luck with you dog! & just always use your best judgment.

best idea is no people food at all, as this will reinforce a begging behavior. But if you MUST feed your dog people food, make sure to place it in THEIR bowl, and not feed them directly from the table. Avoid problem foods like chocolate, sweets in general, and fatty foods or foods with small bones. The most appropriate foods are meat (without bones), vegetables and dairy products.

certain kinds of people food are bad for your dog like candy acidic food fatty food if your going to give your dog people food don't give it to him everyday like every once and while like you would a treat
most human food is bad for dogs avoid fatty food and candy like chocolate which could lead to death and no processed foods, you can feed your dog steak, chicken(boneless) pork, deer, carrots and other veggies, pasta without the sauce because tomatoes have to much acid that dogs cant tolerate some dogs even like fruit. all this food is safe i fed my German shepherd these foods but not everyday mostly as treats here and there he stuck mainly to dog food. the only food that i gave him everyday was one large carrot that he loved to death.

I'm not sure, but maybe. My vet told me not to feed cats people food because its bad for them and will cause them problems.
So maybe its the same with dogs. Less is better.
