I never had it before and do not remember injuring myself there. My concern is there is a 1" x 1" bruise on my shin and it is indented. Like it is not smooth when you run your finger across it.

It seems to be only on the skin surface. I've tried massaging it but it doesn't go away.

You may have bruised your shin a while ago, and just now noticed the dent in your shin bone. There is a type of bruise called a
'bone bruise,' which looks like the situation you are describing. Bone bruises can take a very long time to heal. A bone bruise damages the periosteum, which is the outside layer of the bone that contains the nerves and blood vessels for the underlying bone. When the periosteum is bruised and minor damage occurs to the underlying bone, the injured cells sometimes are damaged enough to break some of the bone structure, but not damaged enough to trigger deposition of bone material, so a dent develops. In more severe bone bruises, you can end up with a bump that develops because the injury triggers excess deposition of bone material. I have dents and bumps all over my shins from playing soccer 20 years ago.

If it is on the bone than it means it could be a fracture. but a bruise is dead blood cells underneath the skin. If you massage the skin then it might go away with time but a brusie that big and hard will take a long long time to go away.

Banging on it is what makes the bruise bigger, I'm pretty sure.
