What type of metal are these pellets made of? My son accidentally shot himself in the leg and the pellet is still just under the skin. He won't go to the doctor. I'm concerned about lead poisoning. If there is no lead content, what type of metal are these made of, and what toxicity concerns should I have?

I believe they are made of lead. Look on the container they pellets came in. The last one I read said to even wash hands after use to remove lead residue. If it is just under the skin, get it out. I would still recommend getting him to the DR also. Just to be safe. He is your son.

Pellets are lead. But the human body has a tendency to encapsulate foreign matter so it won't ever be a prob. The only place you would have to worry about lead poisoning is if the pellet/bullet ended up near a joint. Joints give off some sort of enzyme that dissolves lead into the body. The biggest problem is from infection. Pellets get dirty and they carry that dirt into the wound with them.

If it's just under the skin, though, you should get it out. You should be able to just push it out the way it came by pressing on the skin. Once out, clean the wound well and keep an eye on it and see your doc if it turns overly red or feels hot.

You will have to check out the packaging on the pellet container. BB gun .177 caliber pellets come in steel, lead, copper plated zinc, and possibly one or two other metals or alloys.

Honestly, you should get him to the doctor if you or him aren't going to remove it yourselves. Most of us who as kids got them lodged under the skin just squeezed and worked them out by ourselves, then washed the wound and slapped a band-aid on it. Its not a good idea to leave a foreign object in the body. Over time, the acid in the blood will eat at it, and the metal will enter your blood stream (if it was in your stomach your stomach acid would eat at it and make it absorbed through digestion) - that's how lead poisoning occurs (or any other metal poisoning for that matter). When not exposed to acid, lead is inert.

Lead. They might have a copper plating. Check the container. Look at the pellets. It will be obvious if they are plated. Nonetheless, they are made of lead. You might want to go to a doctor to have a look. The wound from the pellet breaking the skin should at least be looked at.

He won't get lead poisoning from the pellet, it's to little of a pellet to get lead poisoning. Just dig the pellet out and put a bandage on it and it will heal up it a few days. To get lead poisoning you would have to have about 6 pellets in his leg and have them stay there. If you get the pellet out there's no risk of lead poisoning.

I would probably see a doctor but is not critical.

If it is a pellet( a cone shaped projectile with a flute arround its rear) it is made from LEAD!!!
if it is a pointed deal with brightly coloured fethers(also knoen as a dart) it is galvanized(zink/tin) steel. and the feathers arenylon(can harver bacteria).
if it is a round ball(BB) they are usually tin/zink,or copper plated steel.
EITHER WAY TAKE YOUR SON TO THE HOSPITAL SO IT CAN BE REMOVED.!!!OR DO IT YOUR SELF
ALL THESE OBJECTS HAVE GALVANIC REACTIONS TO MOIST ENVIROMENT WICH WILL RESAULT IN INFECTIONS. HERE IS A FEW THINGS
E-COLLI,FECAL COLIFORM,GANGERINE.
IF IT IS IN HIS FOOT THER IS ONLY OHA FEW DOZEN JOINTS NEER BY TO DISOLVE THE METAL.
