Strike the "near me". That's redundant.

Because 50 foot metallic penis would've cost them $100 more.

Although I am a strong Christian, I am not a "church" person so have a pretty negative opinion of churches that do such things. It is no doubt a beautiful cross but it is such a shame to use the money for that instead of using it to help the needy and to spread the gospel to others. I'm afraid that churches who set their priorities based on what the church looks like (inside or out) rather than what is taught there have missed the mark. God did not start churches, nor did Jesus. Christianity is a faith, not a building.

Reminds me of Oral Roberts.

He plunked a ton of money on this supposedly fantabulous hospital, and right away learned the meaning of "What if they gave a hospital, and no body came?

So, what does he do? He collects as much money as he can from his "faithful followers". Do they plow that money into the hospital?

NO!

He uses it, instead, to build a three story high statue of the Praying Hands in front of the hospital.

Fitting tomb stone. It's now an office complex.

I don't know why they do such things, but, it's their money, and they got it from duping people out of it. If they don't like it, they can stop giving money.

Sadly there are churches that do that sort of thing... There is one in the city in which I live that spent several million on a work out center, justifying in on the basis of distorting the "body is a temple" logic...

On the plus side, the sanctuary is big enough to hold the Hindenburg...

I guess the minister didn't need a new house this year.

Actually, you may want to look into who was given the contract to erect the cross and whether $400,000 is a fair market price for such a project. A church can lose its tax-exempt status if insiders or private entities benefit too greatly from the church's income.

They have it all wrong. They think that God has difficulty seeing them; so, they think that a 50 foot cross will make him notice them. Problem is, God never looks at buildings or crosses, but at human hearts. Obviously the pastor and the board of demons are more concerned about their appearances than they are about the poor, the hungry, the sick, those in prison and those in need of hearing the gospel message of Jesus Christ. A lot of pastors are leading their congregations straight to hell, and they will be at the front of the column when Jesus kicks the whole lot of them off the cliff into the lake of fire. God save the American church from itself.

I do not know. That money would certainly have been better spent elsewhere in spreading the gospel to those in your neighborhood or abroad wouldn't it? I can not see that kind of expense as being a good use of "church funds". We do not do such frivolous spending where I attend. Have a great day.

Okay I am a Christian, but I have problems with churches that spend an absorbent amount of money on things like HUGE brick buildings and crazy material things! I think it is sinful!

Probably because a 50 foot wooden cross would be too maintenance intensive, and would also be a fire hazard.

Why dont you go and ask them? Seems to me it was the whole church community that would have done this, not just the church itself. Why? Because the parishioners would have to approve it being the money came from them

That, my dear is a showy display. Read what the bible says about that. 1 John 2:16
