My cat is roughtly 11 years old and somewhat spoiled. Throughout her life we have fed her two packets of tender vittles and as much dry cat food (meow mix hairball control) as she desired. She has been very happy and the vets tell us she is healthy. What is a relatively soft catfood that may replace tender vittles for our cat?

I feed all my cats Innova EVO dry food, with occasional cans of Eukanuba canned food. The Innova is expensive, yes, but they eat much less of it than cheaper brands, and their poops are really small, since there's less "filler" in it (they are like Tootsie Rolls!) My eldest cat passed away this past January, at age 17, and he has been eating Innova and/or Eukanuba for a LONG time. Yes, I realize that there were a few types of the canned Eukanuba on the recall list, so we are feeding Spot's Stew cans (for cats, but they steal it from my dog, too!) now, and we may continue to do so. Spot's Stew looks good enough for me to cook up and eat! The semi-soft cat food is supposed to be the worst, because it has the most preservatives. And feeding hard food (even occasionally) is good for Kitty's teeth and gums, which can be a major health concern for a cat of 11 years. Don't worry, she is not that old, you probably have years to go with her!

I recommend feeding a good quality canned food - you can choose any or all from the link below. These are extremely good quality foods and NONE of them are on the recall list.

I don't recommend semi-moist foods - what I've heard about them is that they're very high in sugars and other nasty things.

I don't advocate dry food at all, but there are a few brands out there that are ok. Is there some reason she can't eat hard food, such as a dental issue? Or is it just that she's used to the soft food?

If the latter, try her on the canned foods from the list. Not only are you sure to find at least one that she likes, but the benefits from feeding these good foods are countless!

We fed the cat I had growing up Tender Vittles and he died of kidney failure. Now that I am more educated, I think he died from Tender Vittles.

Feed your cat a high quality cat food from a pet store and feed some canned food as well. Look for food with no by-products or chemical preservatives in it.

Hi Matt,

Try Innova food, Senior Formula dry food. The canned Innova food is great also. Stay away from the commercial or "premium" pet foods sold at the major retailers. If the label on the can or bag says "meat by-products", "corn" , "grain fillers", put it back on the shelf and walk away. Log on to: www.naturapet.com, and type in your zip code and area code, they will locate a specialty pet food supplier in your area to purchase the Innova Food. You can call Innova at (800) 532-7261. They are located in Santa Clara, CA. Here's to good health and a long life for your spoiled, 11-year-old feline. Mine is 10 and is a real diva, spoiled rotten and loved to pieces!

one of my cats was barfing a "good" food, dry kibble, and hates the "good" canned foods. I found a semi-moist kibble but very little information on it. My cat loves it and the barfing has stopped but I want more info so I called the company and the phone was answered unprofessionally. they took my name and number but no call back yet. Susan Thixton, cat expert, says she is concerned about the grade of chicken and the ground pecan shells but had no other input. www.wagers.com

i like to think that if you use the meat hammer often enough , that your vittles would stay nice and tender.
