My spouse had miscarriage last year when she was not working. Now she is working in a hospital and 6 wks pregnate. She is worried that standing all day, attending to patients like lifting, pushing the push the cart, and helping them with their needs could cause another misscariage. Her dr. said she should not lift any thing above 10 lbs. She wants to quit. Is working bad for pregnancy? How can I reassure her

If her doctor says she shouldn't lift anything over ten pounds, then she shouldn't lift anything over ten pounds. Obviously, the doctor thinks this could be a problem for her, otherwise s/he would not have given this advice (I've never been told to limit what I carry during the first trimester).

The fact is, you can't reassure her. Having a miscarriage can be devastating, and the worry in subsequent pregnancies never really subsides. Also, working long hours or standing for long periods of time HAVE been connected with miscarriage or premature labor in some women, so it's quite possible that working could risk another miscarriage.

You need to talk to your wife, honestly and openly. LISTEN to her concerns, don't just try to make them go away. Ask the doctor questions, or do internet research together. Take an honest look at your finances, and find out if you can afford for her to quit. And then decide as a couple.

You are in a difficult situation, and I do not envy you. But please keep in mind that if she wants to quit and you insist she continue working, and she DOES have another miscarriage, she may never forgive you. And you may never forgive yourself. Even if working isn't what caused it.

Good luck!

If her doctor feels she should not lift over ten pounds she should ask for "light duty" and follow her doctor's instructions! Other than that, normal activity that was done prior to pregnancy is okay to continue during pregnancy. In fact it is encouraged as being physcially fit will help pain management during the active phase of labor as well as healing in the post partum period. It sounds like there is more going on in her pregnancy if her doctor gave her that specific instruction. But speaking from clinical experience as well as personal experience, unless specifically contraindicated by her doctor, regular tolerated physical activity at work will not cause a miscarriage. Miscarriages are usually caused in early in pregnancy (up to 8wks) due to genetic anomalies and cannot be prevented. Check with her doctor yourself if you are concerned.

Women everywhere work all the time during oregnancy. And MC is certainly not caused by anything that you can control. Working will not cause his and as long as she is following instructions from her dr. she should be fine. There is usually a 25lbs. weight limit given about 20 weeks or so but if she already has one for whatever reason she should follow that. If hse wants to quit and you are financially stable enough to let her do so why not? I quit and now I stay home.

since she had the miscarriage when she was not working, I doubt that has anything to do with it. it's usually because there's something very wrong with the fetus.
