Ok, here's the trick with pet food. I am a vet tech. in California and have been trying for years to get the labels on dog food to be actual amounts for the weight of the dog. Read the back or side of your bag for the size of your dog and cut the amounts in half. They usually go high so your pet eats more and then you... buy more! So, if he is around 20# feed 1 cup three times a day because he's a puppy, around 6 to 7 months 1 cup twice a day, unless he's over 50#. Because you said lab too he may get big. Eventually, you can feed adult food and if he's over 50# 2 cups twice daily. Now, if you add canned food ever or lots of treats that day decrease the amount of dry by 1/3 to 1/2 depending on what he gets that day. Good luck and remember to be your dogs first advocate to good health.

Puppies are to be fed three times a day until they are 6 months old and then twice a day until they are a year old. Depending on the breed of dog is the amount to be fed. You don't want to feed a Chihuahua puppy the same amount as a Lab puppy. I would start off with a cup and a half to two cups at each setting. If your puppy is still hungry after he has finished give him a little more and see. If he eats it all and is still hungry continue to give him small amounts until he walks away. He will quit eating when he is full and this will give you some idea as the amount for the next setting. Once the dog is done pick up the dish, do not leave it for him to finish later. Puppies are hungrier at one time more then another. If he is active before he eats he will likely eat more then if he is resting or sleeping before he eats. Go to your search engine and look up both breeds: ie; Beagle puppy and Lab puppy, they will generally tell you how to take care of them and you will have to incorporate both breeds. After a year I keep dry food down all the time so that my dogs can eat whenever they want. I hope this helps.

puppies will usually eat more than you could believe-the best idea for a puppy like this is to feed it 3-4 times a day. the feeding instructions on the bag usually tell you to give them a little more than you really should, so err on the side of a little less than the instructions. Be particularly careful after feeding with watering your dog, as too much water right after eating can lead to bloat-which in the best case will cause your puppy to vomit up all the food he just ate, and in the worst case could cause stomach torsion (twisting of the stomach).

I think it's trial and error. My dogs weigh about 15 lbs and they are "SUPPOSED" to get a cup and a half of food each day... well, let me tell you, they eat about 3 cups each a day! And they are in no way over weight! My JRT is pretty thin actually (but he is REALLY active), & my Westie has lost a little since I got her....
so, on the back of the bag of food, it should say what amount to feed him. Start with that... if he's kicking around his food bowl, give him a little more.

You should use the recommendation from your vet. You can also use the recommendation from the supplier. Look on the side of the bag it tells you how much to feed. Overfeeding, like in humans, is not a good thing. You need to watch his activties vs his food intake. Feed the recommendation, if he seems to be loosing weight then add food and visa versa.
enjoy your puppy.

first of all it should say it on the side of the pkt ..if you use dry dog food it will say the weight of dog etc..I have saint bernard and she is required 3.3/4 cups per day..but a puppy divide it up & give it twice a day. Never leave it around once she has taken what she wants..allow the dog 15 minutes..

It should give you good direction right on the bag of food.
If not then give him 1 cup of food in the morning. Then another around noon to 1 pm then another cup at dinner time.
This is what I fed all my pups at that age.
