Baking soda will not harm your dog, but will only help somewhat in removing odor. Baking soda, generally (in grooming, that is), is used as a sort of degreaser. Chances are your groomer is not using a powder to make him smell good, it's a spray. As for the baking soda ... if a dog has an oily coat, some groomers will sprinkle baking soda (or cornstarch) on the dog, work it in well with a brush, allow it some time to absorb the oily residue, then bathe the dog to remove the grease and baking soda powder left over.

To remove odor without giving your dog a full bath, I would purchase a waterless shampoo from a pet retailer, and some doggy cologne/perfume.

Remember, though, that dogs should be bathed at least every 8-10 weeks (depending on breed ... you didn't specify) and some dogs need grooming much more frequently than that! The waterless shampoo and cologne should only be used for in-between grooming touch-ups.

Also, if the smell persists even after grooming, you should check with your vet ASAP. Many medical issues can cause horrid odors (infections of the ears, skin, eyes ... food allergies and some parasites can cause a smell, among others).

Good luck!

Dogs. Stink. Some of them are just stinky little things no matter what you do!

I would suggest using baby powder! I put this on my westie, not because she stinks, but becasue she has oily skin and it helps her.

Also, maybe his food is the cause. If you are feeding him cheap food, this will make him stink. Try feeding him a high quality, holistic, food.

We adopted a Siberian a year or so ago and he was very stinky for many months! Then, it just started getting better and now he smells fine. I think it was the good nutrition and plenty of exercise and regular vet visits that helped. Although the nickname "Big Stinky" stuck around... :)

The powder you are smelling from the Vets is a dry shampoo - not baking soda. You can buy it at most Pets Marts or Petco's.

Baking soda wont hurt - but it wont help much either

You can buy that powder at the pet store. Be careful though, if you use it too often they will break out, get hot spots, or flaky skin! I have never heard of baking soda.... I have used baby powder before though!
