I have a 16mo old nuetered male Toy Fox Terrier. Now sometimes when me and my husband leave, he'll get into the trash. (try to eat what he can, yes he's a pig) As soon as we walk in he'll sit in the corner shaking his little butt off bc he knows he did something wrong. How do we discipline him? Does he just do this out of boredom? I don't want to have to move the trash bin on the counters, I want him to learn that it's wrong. Any advice? Thanks!

PS YES he does have plenty of toys and always a bowl of food and water.

Trash is his toy - and he will continue having fun in it whenever you are out. Why don't you just buy a trash can with a lid?

Training him to stay out of the trash is going to be MUCH harder than just addressing the issue with the can you use.

FOOD BALLS!! They are awesome. You can do that, and hide little treats around the house, so he has to look for them. Also there is a spray that detracts some dogs from the trash cans.
Its either bordem or anxiety. You cannot discipline a dog unless you catch them in the act. He doesn't know he did something wrong, he knows that when you have come home in the past, you have yelled at him. Its your dog being nervous- not anticipating a scolding for the trash.

We have a beagle that used to get into the trash every time that we left as well. We called an animal behavioralist and this was his advice: he told us that we either needed to make it so the dog couldn't get to the trash (crate train her) or remove the temptation. So we have ended up putting our trash in the garage (which is connected to the house). I am not sure that is the most helpful answer that you will get, but that is the solution that we found for the problem.

Crate him when you leave, the trash is a dangerous place for a dog. Once he's done there, who knows what he'll get into next.

First you cannot punish him for digging in the trash UNLESS you catch him in the act .I would spry some ammonia or something foul smelling to try to prevent him from doing it..He shakes his little but of because he is happy to see you..He does not know digging in the trash is wrong to him it smells good.

he needs to be trained not to dig the trash can, yes he might be bored. you can start with changing your trash can to one that can seal itself tightly, even when its knocked down, like those that has a lid that opens only when you step it and closes tightly coz its heavy. one way of training him is to buy the repellent spray from the pet store-it can be a odor emitting spray or a foul taste spray that you spray on the trash can that repels the dog from digging from there, or, you can be watching when he tries to get to the trashcan and start diggy and spray water on his face-plain water and say firmly ''no''. if he stops, give him his favourite treat. repeat this training till he gets it.

Dogs do not get the concept of "wrong".
Any punishment you can give him will not be associated with him going into the garbage, it will be associated with whatever is happening when you punish him (ie you're coming home).
Put the garbage elsewhere, or get a dog-proof container.
