It may sound cheesy, but just send a smpathy card, and inside write something like, I'm here if you need me, or let me know if I can do anything. That way he knows you care but it gives him and easy out, and you will feel better knowing that you did something.

I think if it means that much to you then you should express your sympathy to him and then just tell him, if he does need anything that you are there for him.Explain that you know how it feels to loose someone. Who knows maybe he needs someone to talk to. Its out of kindness and it doesn't hurt anyone. so go for it.
