Very disrespectful. Not to mention you will look like a complete moron.

My brother showed up to his only siblings wedding( mine) in a Bermuda shirt and shorts. He may have been also wearing sandles I do not know. I had a bridal gown with the train and my husband wore a tux naturally. I was so glad that my brother did not miss my wedding ( that would have been disrespectful). Even at 20 I realized that he being there at my wedding was far more important than what he was wearing. So I would say that if the groom was wearing a wife beater, shorts and sandles then yes that is disrespectful (even for a beach wedding) otherwise no.

Is it a casual wedding???
Are the Bride and Groom getting married in a Speedo and Bikini???
Is it on the beach with a BBQ after for the reception???
If the answer to these questions are a yes, then you should definately show up in your wife-beater, shorts and sandals.
If it is a formal affair then you should rethink things. If you can't afford someone formal, go to the GoodWill and get something. You can find something there real nice for $5 - $10 bucks.
If you came to my wedding like that, I would have a hard time with it.

The attire of choice depends on the type of wedding that is being held. Though I would not think a wife beater, short, and sandals would be appropriate for really any type of wedding, and would likely be construed as very disrespectful.
If the wedding is in more of a church type setting I'd say go more formal. If it is a beach/luau type wedding then more causal would be the way to go (though like I said the outfit you described would be too casual).
When in doubt ask the person who invited you the dress code they are looking for.

Yes, unless it's an outdoor, and very casual affair like a picnic. But even at that, you want to error on the side of caution by wearing a polo shirt and khaki shorts - even if the couple said "casual" in the invite because it's just more respectful.

This manner of dress would not only be disrespectful but would also make you look the fool. Instead of going to the wedding, why not just mail a card with money inside. This is always an acceptable gesture.

Much to casual. Unless of course the wedding was held on a beach and the bride and groom are wearing cut off and t shirts.

If its a hippie wedding on the beach in California or something, then its ok. Do hippies even get married these days or do they think its evil or something? Perhaps a marriage in the ghetto -- but then you have to at least wear a giant gold chain or a grill with your casual clothes.

Yes. It is their special day. A lot of planning has gone into making it happen and they want you to be there to share in the special-ness (yes, I know I made up a word) of it. You can find clothes cheap on sale or at consignment shops as others mentioned if you don't have something a bit more dressy.

You've got to remember that the wedding day is to honor the bride and groom. It's their day! Unless the bride and groom have specifically said that it is a casual event, then dress in a manner that honors them.
Great question that I wish more people would ask :)

it depends on the formality of the wedding. BUT I would typically say that you should at least wear nice, pressed jeans and maybe a polo shirt with some nice brown shoes
