Many people with Type I CM are asymptomatic and do not know they have the condition. Many patients with the more severe types of CM and have surgery see a reduction in their symptoms and/or prolonged periods of relative stability, although paralysis is generally permanent. The NINDS (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) supports research on disorders of the brain and nervous system such as Chiari malformations. The goals of this research are to increase scientific understanding of these disorders and to find ways to prevent, treat, and, ultimately, cure them. Medications may ease certain symptoms, such as pain. Surgery is the only treatment available to correct functional disturbances or halt the progression of damage to the central nervous system. More than one surgery may be needed to treat the condition.

I add links to support groups etc:

Is this the same thing or similar to Arnold Chiari Syndrome? If so, after several years of searching for appropriate meds and a daily routine which accomadates the pain management, my sister, who is now 22 has an awesome job and just recently got married. She missed two full years of high school and thus didn't graduate, but she makes more money than many college graduates do. This isn't to say, she doesn't still have a lot of pain. She has just learned when she needs to take it easy and that some saturdays will be mainly spent in bed. Overall, she would say she is happy with her life though.

Good luck!
