Please take him to the vet as soon as you can; he might need stitches, he probably will need a good clean-up, antibiotic cover and pain relief (depending on how bad it is). Your vet can also advise you on longer-term wound care (likely to involve either bandaging or regular bathing with an antiseptic solution). They'll be able to tell you how bad the damage is.

If it's bleeding a lot and he lets you then you can put pressure on the ear with a clean towel / cloth to reduce bleeding while you're taking him to the vet. The amount of blood from an ear is unlikely to be life-threatening but it still could be a considerable amount.

As to who's responsible, if the other dog attacked your dog and their owner admits it then they may well pay your vet bill. If they were both up for a fight then you'll have a hard time proving whose fault it was unless the other dog has a history of fighting (and yours doesn't).

If your dog is bad with other dogs you might want to look into contacting a good behaviourist to advise you on helping him cope without fighting. Your vet should have more information.

Good luck, I'm sure he'll be fine with the right care!

Take the poor thing to the vet now!!! leave now!!! If you still have the ear piece they can possibly re-attach, but don't wait any longer. The vet will clean it properly and give medication to fight infection. They will also check for possible ear damage, meaning internally.

Do you know the owner of the other dog? I think they can be prosecuted unless it was your dogs fault. Check with the vets!
