I had a teacher once that talked to us about this problem in high school. He said there had been studies that showed the reason many students fell asleep in class was because of the way they were sitting. The slouching position did not allow blood to flow as freely, cut off some of the oxygen flow to the brain and made us feel drowsy.
We experimented with different ways of helping us stay awake in class. We found that if we sat with good posture and made sure to breathe regularly (as people tend to hold their breath when slouching) we were much more alert. We also stretched in between classes to relieve cramped muscles that were constricting the blood flow.
It was amazing how much such simple techniques helped us stay awake!

This seems to be an issue with students when they are not eating right and not getting any real nutrients necessary for proper brain and neurological function. If you start by eating a healthy breakfast in the morning(pop tarts, toaster strudels, donuts, and danishes-do not qualify as healthy breakfasts) and drinking lots of water(cutting out the high sugared fruit drinks and drinking juice that's 100% juice) Red Bull and Monster are not substitutes for healthy meals in fact that's the worst stuff ever invented.

maybe it's what you're studying. Home schooling does not have to be dull and dry like a publicschool classroom environment.
Talk to your mom about jazzing things up with, oh I don't know, science experiments, interesting labs, some good historical fiction to enhance your social studies, field trips, some type of exercise during the day.
And help your mom plan meals and grocery shopping so you have something more nutritious in your fridge than energy drinks. that's just a fancy name for "sugar high" and that doesn't work.
If you are working hard, and sufficiently stimulated academically during the day, and you are eating right and you are getting fresh air and sunshine during the day, then you should not have a problem sleeping at night.
If you do, then your mom needs to make an appointment with your doctor to find out what the problem is.
but it sounds like you're bored to me, so work WITH your mom to jazz it up, and eat right and your drowsiness should clear right up.

you did not say where you live. smog is a big factor, heat is also. sitting is not a normal posture, walking is. have a regular exercise program along with nutrition. work with a personal trainer in a gym. stay away from caffeine products, they have a tendency of dulling the brain and interfering with circulation. Learn to breath. Take a yoga class .deep breathing techniques are very important.

You need to go to a sleep specialist. I struggled with sleep and sleepiness from high school to the present. Not until I was in my 40s did a couple of doctors finally explain to me that I was not IMAGINING the problems. They understood that I was not CHOOSING to be this way. I simply have a sleep disorder. Once you find out WHY you struggle to fall asleep at night, and then to stay awake in the daytime, you can seek help for yourself. It begins with a diagnosis. Sleep studies show amazing things (and most of the studies are covered by insurance - at least for people I've known who needed to have sleep studies done). Take care of yourself and get help, and GOD BLESS. :)

I'm guessing that you didn't actually mean to put this in the homeschooling section and that you actually go to a school?
I think it would be important to discuss your issues with the guidance counsellor as well as see a doctor. They may be able to identify specific issues causing you sleep problems or provide something that will help you.

Gum is supposed to keep oxygen flowing to your brain, it works for me, when I was in public school (homeschooled now) I used to ask teachers if I could chew gum in class so I could pay more attention in class and they let me. Studies show that it helps most students in school. I hope this works for you!
