The news agencies like conflict and controversy. Most likely the death of a church leader that lived a clean life with no scandals would receive little national coverage unfortunately.
However if a spiritual leader of any faith makes sexual, racial, violent, or other shocking remarks it would be on the front page. If they are actually involved in committing these acts, then they spend months in the news.
It is the way of this world that shock value is a key factor in what is news worthy.

They report on several religious leaders. But, how people actually watch the news anymore? I know I don't have a chance.

They reported on Ted Haggard.
They rarely report on anybody. They report the news that the majority wants to hear.
The majority are white protestants.
They report on Catholics too because the Catholic church is rich.
