I just opened an avacado, and it was mostly brown in color near the seed. Not ripe?

The seed is naturally brown. Before you cut the avocado, you should squeeze it a bit and if there is some give, (slightly soft) then you know it is ripe. The softer it is, the more ripe. Too soft (mushy) may be too ripe. After you cut it, the flesh should be green, slightly yellowish but it should be a bit soft. If the entire avocado flesh is turning brown, then it's probably over ripened or exposed to freezing temperatures and won't be very tasty.

THey need to be somewhat soft but NOT mushy. If they are still as hard as a rock put them in a paper bag till they get ripe. After a couple of days they should be good to go.

Gently squeeze them, and if they indent, then they are ripe.

Take em home while they are hard, they are ready when they are slightly mushy.
